Author expo will showcase local talent

MARIETTA, GA (February 2, 2012) -- The Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System’s second-annual Local Author Expo will be held on Saturday, March 3 at the Central Library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Central Library is located at 266 Roswell Street in downtown Marietta.

Local authors are invited to participate in the fundraiser. Registration is free, although the Friends of the Library requests a 10% donation of sales to the organization. Space is limited.

MARIETTA, GA (January 31, 2012) -- The Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System’s semi-annual book sale will be held Friday and Saturday, March 23-24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 from 1-5 p.m. at the Jim R. Miller Park on 2245 Callaway Road in Marietta.

Donated items for the book sale include soft-cover and hard-back books, magazines, text books, DVD and VHS movies, and children’s books. Prices range from 10 cents to $5. Last year, the book sales generated more than $80,000 which enabled the library staff to purchase new materials, including books and DVDs.

The March book sale attracts thousands of book-lovers to the event and is one of the two large semi-annual sales held yearly. This year’s sale also coincides with the Cobb Library Foundation’s second-annual Wild West Fest, which will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jim R. Miller Park. Tickets to the fest are for sale online and available at the door; entrance is free for children 3 and under. All proceeds are designated to benefit the programs and services of the Cobb County Public Library System. Cobb libraries celebrate African American History Month with stories, movies, author visits, and more

MARIETTA, GA (January 24, 2012) – The Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS) is honoring the contributions and lasting legacies of African Americans throughout history with several events during January and February.  All events are free and open to the public.

The highlight of the library system’s celebration will be the second-annual African American History Month Gala on Saturday, February 11 at 2 pm at the Central Library. This informal event will feature performances by the Zion Liturgical Dancers, the AL Burruss Unity Drummers, the South Cobb High School Steppers, saxophonist Ravan Durr, and special readings by Mrs. Deane Bonner. An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maid's point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. Meet nationally-renowned, award-winning author Shelia P. Moses

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System invites the public to meet Shelia P. Moses at the Vinings Library on Thursday, February 2nd at 3:30 pm.  Moses is the co-author of Dick Gregory's memoir, Callus on My Soul, as well as the award-winning author of several books for young readers: The Legend of Buddy Bush; The Return of Buddy Bush; I, Dred Scott: A Fictional Slave Narrative Based on the Life and Legal Precedent of Dred Scott; Joseph; and The Baptism.

Moses has received several awards for her writing; she was honored as a National Book Award Finalist for Young People’s Literature in 2004. She also earned the Coretta Scott King Book Award Author Honor in 2005 for her book The Legend of Buddy Bush. Her book I, Dred Scott earned her the Georgia Author of the Year Award in 2006. 

Her visit to the Vinings Library will include a discussion on historical fiction and research as well as a question-and-answer session.  A book signing, sponsored by the Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System, will be held after the event. Second-annual African American History Month Gala highlights culture, history in Cobb County

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System invites the public to its second-annual African American History Month Gala, which will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2 pm at the Central Library. The program is appropriate for all ages. The Central Library is located at 266 Roswell Street in downtown Marietta.

An afternoon of entertainment, culture and history in celebration of African American History Month has been planned. Scheduled performers and presenters include the A.L. Burruss Unity Drummers, the Zion Liturgical Dancers, the South Cobb High School Steppers, Mrs. Deane Bonner of the Cobb NAACP, and noted saxophonist and recording artist Mr. Ravan Durr. “We’re pleased to offer this program again to highlight the rich cultural history in Cobb County,” said event coordinator and Associate Director Thelma Glover. “Last year’s program was such a success.”

The gala is part of the library system’s series of African American History Month activities. Public invited to discover healthy living tips, learn about community resources at the library

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System is launching an informative healthy-living campaign in 2012, called “Discover Your Health at the Library.” The goal of the campaign is to provide opportunities for Cobb County residents to learn how they can have a healthier lifestyle.

According to Cobb & Douglas Public Health, a higher percentage of Cobb residents reported being overweight and to binge drinking than other Georgia residents; Georgia also has a higher percentage of obese children than other states in the nation (source). “The health challenges facing Cobb County are mainly preventable, and we’d like to highlight the resources available to help residents make healthy choices in 2012,” said library director Helen Poyer. “Our ‘Discover Your Health at the Library’ campaign is designed to do that.”

The campaign has several components, including monthly presentations and integration of healthy living tips on the library’s social media networks. Organizations scheduled to present at the library system include Life University, the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta, Cobb Senior Services, and Cobb & Douglas Public Health. Cobb library launches e-government tool

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System has launched a new tool to help the public find government resources online: its e-gov webpage, available at http://www.cobbcat.org/egov. This webpage lists local, state, and federal government resources, including information on financial assistance and benefits; legal, health, and education information; and answers to frequently asked questions.  This e-government tool was created as part of a national grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which was awarded to the American Library Association (ALA) and the Center for Library and Information Innovation (CLII) of the University of Maryland’s iSchool.

Public libraries, including the Cobb County Public Library System, are experiencing an increased demand for e-government assistance. In 2004, the Pew Research Center reported that approximately 97 million adult Americans interacted with the federal government online in 2003 (source), and this number is expected to be much higher today. “As government agencies have continued to digitize forms and services, the Cobb County Public Library System has experienced a tremendous growth in the demand for assistance with e-government resources,” said Jonathan McKeown, Associate Director for Central and Outreach Services. “This portion of our website is designed to help the average citizen of Cobb County find the government services they’re looking for.”

Teens invited to participate in digital media production program

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System will begin a multimedia initiative for teens in 2012. The “Triple D Production Company,” which is being funded by the Cobb Library Foundation, will develop a total health audiovisual program for children ages 6-12. The Cobb Library Foundation received a grant from the Thrashers Foundation in support of this project.

Cobb teens are invited to participate in the program, which will begin in January 2012. Staff members at the library system will schedule events to help teens learn about the process of making films. Teens will also be able to create films of their own. All films will be related to health and will be geared for children.  These films will be shown at the library’s end-of-summer reading party in August 2012. Other components of the program include researching, writing, and editing health-related films.

Children can meet local author at East Cobb Library
MARIETTA, GA -- Local author and artist Britt Menzies is scheduled to present programs for children at the East Cobb Library of the Cobb County Public Library System on Saturday, December 10, 2011. These programs are free and open to the public. The East Cobb Library is located at 4880 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta.

Menzies, author of the StinkyKids series, will present two programs at the library. The first will be at 11 am and will be a story time for families. The story time will feature characters and stories from the StinkyKids series and will also have a fun coloring activity. The second program, at 12:30 pm, will be a creative writing workshop. This program is designed for school age children. Menzies will share tips and tools for helping children express themselves through writing.

“This is a great opportunity for children to meet a real author and hear fun stories that share a good message,” says Program Coordinator Patty Latch. Menzies’ books will also be on sale at the event, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System, Inc. The Friends group is a non-profit organization whose activities benefit and support the Cobb County Public Library System.

Britt Menzies is an Atlanta mom, artist, author, and graduate of Florida State University, and has recently spoken at the AJC Decatur Book Festival. Families can connect over board games, other activities at the library on National Gaming Day

MARIETTA, GA -- On Saturday, November 12, the Central Library of the Cobb County Public Library System will join more than 20,000 people in communities across the U.S. for the American Library Association’s fourth annual National Gaming Day @ your library. Sponsored by FamilyandPartyGames.com, the event aims to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational and social value of all types of games.

Activities scheduled at the Central Library include board games, video games, and scavenger hunts. Public invited to honor veterans at Cobb library

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System is honoring the veterans of the United States Armed Forces with several programs and an exhibit during the month of November. All programs are free, open to the public, and will be held at the Central Library. The Central Library is located at 266 Roswell Street in downtown Marietta.  

In addition to the programs listed below, the Central Library is also hosting the exhibit “Tuskegee Airmen: The Segregated Skies of World War II,” November 2 through January 2, 2012. This exhibit explores the history and heroism of the first African American pilots to fly in combat during World War II. The exhibit is on loan from Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education. It is available for viewing during regular library hours. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

            Programs scheduled include the following:

• Film: “Flags of Our Fathers,” November 7, 2 p.m. Rated R. 132 minutes. This film tells the life stories of the six men who raised the flag at The Battle of Iwo Jima.
• Film: “True Whispers: The Story of the Navajo Code Talkers,” November 28, 5:30 p.m. Not rated. 57 minutes. Exploring the personal and heartfelt story of the Navajo Code Talkers, this film tells the stories of the young Navajo men who devised an unbreakable code using their native language to transmit vital messages during World War II.
• Presentation: “Tuskegee Airmen: Conversation with the Curator,” November 30, 3:30 p.m. Dr Jennifer Dickey, Coordinator of the Public History Program at Kennesaw State University will speak about the Tuskegee Airmen and their role as Civil Rights pioneers. Dr. Dickey will also explain how the exhibit was curated by public history students at Kennesaw State University.

Children can hear stories celebrating Native American heritage, history at South Cobb Regional Library

MARIETTA, GA – The South Cobb Regional Library of the Cobb County Public Library System will be presenting a Native American Heritage Month Story Time on Friday, November 18 at 3:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. The South Cobb Regional Library is located at 805 Clay Road in Mableton.

The story time will feature Native American stories, songs, and cultural information, and is geared for children ages five and up.  “Celebrating different cultures is extremely important for people of all ages,” says youth services librarian Julienne Marks. “We’re proud to host programs that celebrate the diverse nature of our community.”

In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 "National American Indian Heritage Month." Cobb libraries celebrate Teen Read Week

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System will celebrate Teen Read Week™ (October 16-22, 2011) with special events and programs aimed at encouraging area teens to read for the fun of it. Thousands of libraries, schools and bookstores across the country will hold similar events centered on this year’s theme, Picture It! @ your library®, which encourages teens to read a variety of materials, including graphic novels, movie scripts, books about photography, and more. Teen Read Week™ is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association.

The Cobb County Public Library System is dedicated to serving teens’ need to read. “Teens have more activities to fill their free time than ever — web videos, social networking sites, video games, afterschool activities, athletics —and increasingly high expectations in the classroom,” said Jennifer Wells, Youth and Media Services Coordinator at the Central Library. “It’s important that we show them that reading is something that’s fun and relaxing that they can do for free. And that reading for fun can translate into better performance at school.”

The Cobb County Public Library System hopes to show parents and other concerned community members what the library can offer by hosting special programs and events during Teen Read Week™. “Many families have learned to make do with less as a result of the economy and have flocked to the library,” Wells said. “Teen Read Week™ is a great time to make sure teens and their families know about all the free services the library can offer them and to reach out to teens who aren’t regular users and encourage them to come see what they can find here.”

Parents of teens are encouraged to celebrate Teen Read Week™ at home, as well. Wells offers these ideas:

• Visit the public or school library with your teen to attend a program or to check out books.
• Set aside time each night for the family to read.
• Give books or magazine subscriptions to your teen as a gift or reward.
• Share your favorite book with your teen.
• Go online with your teen to learn about new books or authors. A good place to start is YALSA's Booklists and Book Awards page, www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists.
• Join a book discussion group at the school or public library.

Cobb library helps college-bound find financial aid

MARIETTA, GA – The Powder Springs Library of the Cobb County Public Library System will be hosting a financial aid seminar on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 11 a.m. It is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. The Powder Springs Library is located at 4181 Atlanta Street in Powder Springs.

The seminar is open to anyone interested in learning more about the financial aid process. A representative from Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) will present general information about the types of financial aid available, sources of funding, the forms required to receive scholarships, grants, and other types of financial aid, and more. Interested participants do not need to be students at GPC or planning to attend the college.

Cobb library book sale has big bargains for readers
MARIETTA, GA – The Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System’s semi-annual book sale will be held October 14-15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and October 16 from 1-5 p.m. at the Jim R. Miller Park on 2245 Callaway Road in Marietta.

Donated items for the book sale include soft-cover and hard-back books, magazines, text books, DVD and VHS movies, and children’s books. Prices range from 10 cents to $5. Last year, the book sales generated more than $80,000 which enabled the library staff to purchase new materials, including books and DVDs.

The October book sale attracts thousands of book-lovers to the event and is one of the two large semi-annual sales held yearly.

Cobb Friends of the Library encourages the public to go green, donate books

MARIETTA, GA - The Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System, a nonprofit group whose activities benefit the library system, is requesting that the public recycles their gently used books by donating them to the Cobb County Public Library System. Donations from the public support the ongoing and special book sales held by the Friends, which in turn support the library system’s book budget. Some items are also added to the library’s collection. Items in high demand include popular fiction titles and children’s books. Items may be dropped off at any location of the Cobb County Public Library System, and all donations are tax-deductible.

The purpose of the Friends’ book sale is to raise money for the library system’s existing book budget, which has been reduced 17% in the past twelve months. “We have had a substantial decrease in our funding from the state and from Cobb County,” according to library director Helen Poyer. “The Friends organization is helping the library make ends meet at a time when demand for books has increased dramatically. And by recycling their books by donating them to the library, the public is helping not only the environment but also the library and the community.”

The Friends hold two large semi-annual book sales and several special book sales throughout the year, and has just implemented a new ongoing book sale at most library locations. The next semi-annual sale is scheduled to be held at Jim R. Miller Park on October 14, 15, and 16. These book sales have raised almost $80,000 in the past twelve months, but continued success of the sales is dependent upon donations. “We wouldn’t have a book sale at all without the support of our donors,” says Jonathan McKeown, Associate Director of Central and Outreach Services. “We are always accepting donations.”

Georgia Department of Labor offers employment seminars at the library

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System is hosting a series of seminars presented by the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL). These sessions will be held at the Powder Springs Library on Tuesdays in October at 11 a.m. They are free and open to the public; registration is not required. Bestselling author presents writing workshop at Kennesaw Library

MARIETTA, GA – The Kennesaw Library of the Cobb County Public Library System will host “Write Your Own Story,” a writing workshop, on September 15. The workshop will begin at 12:30 pm and is led by bestselling author Margaret Johnson-Hodge. The workshop is free and open to the public; space is limited and registration is required. The workshop will focus on leading participants through the process of developing their writing skills. Margaret Johnson-Hodge, author of such books as True Lies, Some Sundays, and In Search of Tennessee Sunshine, will share tips and tools for writers beginning or continuing in their writing journey.

Cobb library hosts Holocaust exhibit

MARIETTA, GA – The Central Library of the Cobb County Public Library System will host a travelling exhibition, “Parallel Journeys: World War II and the Holocaust through the Eyes of Teens.” The exhibit will be on display from September 1 until October 8. It is free, open to the public, and available to view during regular library hours.

The exhibit tells the stories of teenagers and young adults – not all of them heroic – who were witnesses, participants, and often victims of World War II and the Holocaust. “Parallel Journeys” is on loan from the Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education (MHHE). New traveling exhibition explores the work of renowned illustrator Maurice Sendak.

MARIETTA, GA – “In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak,” a traveling exhibition opening at the East Cobb Library on September 8, 2011, reveals the push and pull of New and Old Worlds in Sendak’s work and shows how Sendak’s artistic journey has led him deeper into his own family’s history and his Jewish identity. The exhibit will be on display at the East Cobb Library through October 14, 2011. It is open to the public during regular library hours. The East Cobb Library is located at 4880 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 510, in Marietta.

Maurice Sendak is best known as the illustrator of more than 100 picture books, including Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen. He was born to Polish immigrants in Brooklyn in 1928, and his childhood was typically American in a number of ways. At the same time, he became fascinated as a child with the worn black-and-white photographs of his European relatives, and the influence of both of these worlds – the threads of Jewish family, geography, and culture – can be seen in his imaginative works.

The exhibit is an exploration of Sendak’s illustrations and picture books, revealing connections between these iconic works and Sendak’s childhood, family, and the popular culture of the time. The colorful exhibit panels feature illustrations of ferocious creatures, curious children and vibrant neighborhoods, alongside thematic explorations of the Jewish culture and history – and Sendak’s own family experience – that influenced Sendak’s work. 

“We are delighted to have been selected as a site for this exhibition,” said Helen Poyer, director of the Cobb County Public Library System. “A study of Sendak’s work proves that his illustrations and stories aren’t just for children. He explores immigration, urban life, nostalgia, the New World versus the Old World, even the legacy of the Holocaust, weaving these seemingly adult themes into his imaginative and playful illustrations. Our library is thrilled to host this exhibition and present a more thorough look at the life of a talented author and illustrator beloved by fans young and old.”

“In a Nutshell” was organized by the Rosenbach Museum & Library, Philadelphia, and developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture, and ideas, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The national tour of the exhibit has been made possible by grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the Righteous Persons Foundation, the David Berg Foundation, and an anonymous donor, with additional support from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life. The exhibit was curated by Patrick Rodgers of the Rosenbach Museum & Library.

The East Cobb Library is sponsoring free programs for the public in connection with the exhibition. An opening reception is scheduled for September 8, 2011 at 6 pm. Sendak-themed storytimes for children will be held on Saturday, September 10 at 11 am; Tuesday, September 20 at 4:15 pm; and Tuesday, October 4 at 4:15 pm.  The public is also invited to explore the worlds of Maurice Sendak with storyteller Barry Stewart Mann on Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30 pm. Owning a library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically. The Cobb County Public Library System provides students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials, as well as homework help and resources. In addition, public libraries are the number one access point for free Internet access, an important resource for families without access at home when 96 percent of school districts require students to use the Internet to complete their homework.  

Library Card Sign-up Month, held each September, is a time when libraries across the country celebrate the value of the library card. Activities at the Cobb County Public Library System during Library Card Sign-up Month include book discussion groups, story times, workshops, movie festivals, and more. Cobb Friends of the Library expands book sale

The Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System, a nonprofit group whose activities benefit the library system, has started a new ongoing book sale. The sale is being held at most branches of the library system. Prices for the items, which are primarily paperbacks and popular hardback novels, start at $2.

The purpose of this expanded book sale is to continue to raise money for the library system. “The ongoing sales allow people to purchase items even if they’re not able to attend our large book sales,” according to sale coordinator Patty Latch. “It’s also a great chance for people to pick up a copy of a paperback to bring with them on vacation.” The Friends organization has in the past held two large semi-annual book sales and several special book sales throughout the year. These sales will be scheduled as usual. All proceeds from the Friends’ book sales supplement the library system’s existing book budget.

Library workers walk their way to awards, healthy habits

MARIETTA, GA – Four employees at the Cobb County Public Library System have won a coveted top spot in the Walk Georgia competition. They were awarded their prizes on Thursday, June 2. The contest began in February and ended April 30, 2011.

The “CCPLS Walkaways” team, comprised of members Maryellen Baker, Alexandra Beswick, Patty Latch, and Dorothy Shea, won the “Top Team” award for Cobb County. The group walked and exercised for over 1,427 miles during the competition. Baker, their lead walker, took home the county’s award for the “Top Walker” with over 460 miles.

Walk Georgia is an eight-week competition sponsored by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and its county affiliates. The goals of the program are to encourage participants to be more fit, develop healthy habits, and get support from others also in the program.  Prizes are awarded on a county-wide and state-wide level for the teams and participants who have logged the most miles during the competition.

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System’s Friends of the Library will be holding a special book sale on Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9 from 9 am to 5 pm. The public is invited to this sale, which will be held at the Central Library in downtown Marietta. Entrance to the sale is free, and prices of the items start at $1.

Items to be sold at the special book sale include comic books, antique books, and special collector’s items. “We use this special book sale as an opportunity to sell items that might otherwise be overlooked at our regular book sale,” said sale coordinator Patty Latch. “These items are special and are worth having their own designated sale.” The Friends of the Library hold this special sale about once a year; their other larger semi-annual book sales are usually held in May and October.

The proceeds from all of the Friends of the Library book sales benefit the Cobb County Public Library System and are used to supplement the library system’s materials budget.

Kids should “wiggle” their way to the library to win prizes

Marietta, GA – Children participating in the summer reading program can enter a contest at the Cobb County Public Library System to win free tickets to “The Wiggles Big Birthday Party” at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on July 12, 2011. The contest begins on June 7 and all entries must be received by July 6.

To enter, children should read a book, then complete a book report form and turn it in at the library. The forms are available to download at www.cobbcat.org/wiggles. Parents should bring the completed form back to their local Cobb County Public Library System branch by Wednesday, July 6 to be eligible for the drawing. Winners will be notified via phone or email. All prizes must be picked up by noon on Tuesday, July 12. Only one entry is allowed per child.

“The library is very pleased to partner with the Cobb Energy Centre to provide these tickets,” said Jonathan McKeown, associate director for the Cobb County Public Library System. “Anytime we can help kids get excited about reading, it’s a good thing.”

The Wiggles are a globally-recognized performing group for children who formed in Australia in 1991 and have since become that country’s most successful preschool television program. The group has received worldwide acclaim for its educational and charitable efforts and its members were named UNICEF goodwill ambassadors in 2008. They are currently on a tour of 31 cities in the United States and Canada to celebrate the group’s 20th birthday.

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, located at 2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway in Atlanta, is a major performing arts center in Atlanta. Cobb libraries, Atlanta Hawks team up for kids

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System is taking part in the seventh annual Atlanta Hawks “Check It Out Reading Challenge,” running June 8 through August 19 for students in grades K-12. The event is designed to encourage youth to read throughout the summer months. By reading at least five books, participants can earn a free ticket to a regular season 2011-2012 Atlanta Hawks home game.

After reading their selected books, participants can visit www.checkitoutreading.com to register for the program. An email will be sent out after September 1, 2011 with reward details. A parent or guardian can redeem the tickets using the instructions in the email. Each student completing the program can choose from among several Hawks-selected home games to use the free ticket. Additional tickets for families of the participants can be purchased at discounted prices. The last day to register online for the Reading Challenge is August 19.

Children will have a world of fun at polka performance

MARIETTA, GA – Nationally known accordion player and children’s polka musician Mike Schneider will be performing his Pint Size Polkas program for children of all ages at the Vinings Library of the Cobb County Public Library System. The special performance begins at 6 pm on Monday, June 13, 2011. This event is part of the library’s global-themed Summer Reading Program.

Schneider began performing professionally in 1996. In 2008, he began his Pint Size Polkas venture as “Uncle Mike” with the release of his groundbreaking Pint Size Polkas Volume One CD. Since that time, he has brought a little bit of culture, education, and a whole lot of fun to children and their families across the United States with his Pint Size Polkas program. Uncle Mike educates on concepts like the alphabet, numbers, occupations, personal hygiene, relationships, and foreign language through the happy sounds of polka music. Audience participation is encouraged through numerous sing-along and volunteer opportunities, including the “Chicken Dance.”

Digital photography workshop introduces basic editing, organization techniques

Marietta, GA – Amateur photographers are invited to a basic digital photography class at the Mountain View Regional Library on Saturday, June 25 at 2 pm. Local hobby photographer Steve Roy will be presenting this program, which will focus on the organization of digital photographs and basic editing techniques. This event is free and open to the public; registration is required.

Photographers just beginning to work with digital photographs will learn about Picasa, a free photo editing software from Google. Participants will be shown how to use the program to organize, edit, and share photos, as well as create digital prints using this program. Important topics like backing up digital photographs will also be discussed.

Children will enjoy hearing “tails” of historical animal at the library

Marietta, GA –  Locomotive history will come alive at the Mountain View Regional Library with a special presentation for preschoolers on Wednesday, June 1 at 11 am. The Southern Museum will present a short story about Owney, the canine mascot of the Railway Mail Service, and provide an opportunity for children to learn about animals that work on the railroad.  The program is free and is designed for children, ages three to five, and their caregivers.

Judy Parker, Museum Early Childhood Educator at the Southern Museum, will share the story of Owney and his life on the railroad. According to the National Postal Museum, the dog wandered into a New York post office in 1888 and quickly became a good luck charm for the postal carriers. He rode the rails across the world, serving as a goodwill ambassador and mascot of the Railway Mail Service until his untimely death in 1897. Local author to discuss World War II history, new book at East Cobb Library

Marietta, GA – The public is invited to meet local author Jonathan W. Jordan and learn about World War II history at the East Cobb Library on Thursday, June 16 at 12:30 pm. The event presents a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts of all ages to talk to a nationally-recognized author and scholar. There is no cost to attend. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System.

Jordan’s presentation is entitled “Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, and the Allied Conquest in Europe.” Participants are encouraged to bring a light lunch and enjoy a discussion on these three military leaders and their impact on the outcome of World War II. Copies of the author’s new critically acclaimed book, Brothers, Rivals, Victors, will also be for sale.

Jordan, an attorney at the Atlanta-based law firm King & Spalding LLP, is the author of the award-winning book Lone Star Navy: Texas, the Fight for the Gulf of Mexico, and the Shaping of the American West (Potomac Books 2007), a contributing author to The Armchair Reader: World War II and The Armchair Reader: The Amazing Book of World History, and the editor of the Library of Texas edition of To the People of Texas.  His writing has appeared in World War II magazine, Armchair General, Military History, World War II History, and MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History. He currently resides in Marietta.

MARIETTA, GA – Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as the Cobb County Public Library System presents its travel-themed Summer Reading Program. Children, teenagers, and adults will explore places from Oceania to Russia through stories, crafts, music, puppet shows, book discussions, and other activities.

The 2011 Summer Reading Program begins on June 1 and ends on July 31, with an end-of-summer reading celebration scheduled for Saturday, August 13. The library system has scheduled over 700 programs and activities this summer to celebrate reading and to encourage the development of lifelong literacy skills. Participation in the Summer Reading Program is open to the public and is free of charge.

Children from birth to 5th grade should register to participate in the Summer Reading Program at the library. During registration, they will receive a folder to log the books they have read; at the end of the summer, they are encouraged to bring their folder back to the library to receive a certificate and other prizes.

Young adults in grades 6-12 and adults are encouraged to submit book reviews. Forms can be picked up at the branches, downloaded from the website at http://www.cobbcat.org, or submitted online. They are also invited to check out the library’s social media networks for fun activities, contests, and prizes. Library system operating as usual despite budget reductions, furloughs

MARIETTA, GA. – The Cobb County Public Library System, faced with budget cuts, furloughs, and reductions in staffing hours, is making changes to their operating hours starting May 1. No branches will be closed, despite a previous proposal from the Cobb County Board of Commissioners to close 13 of the system’s 17 branches.

The changes in operating hours come as a result of the $31 million budget shortfall in the Cobb County budget for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2011. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a 10% budget reduction across the board at their meeting on April 12.

To manage these budget cuts and reductions in staff hours, the library system will reduce service hours beginning May 1. The full list of library locations and hours can be found online at http://www.cobbcat.org/ under “Library Hours.” The largest libraries – Central, East Cobb, West Cobb, South Cobb, and Mountain View – will remain open Monday through Wednesday, 10 am – 8 pm; Thursday through Saturday, 11 am – 6 pm.

Despite this reduction in hours, the library system “will continue to provide the level of customer service that people have come to expect from us,” says library director Helen Poyer. “We’re committed to being a vital resource center for the community, and we’ll continue to do so despite these challenges.” The library received an outpouring of support from the community after the initial proposal to close libraries. “The comments, letters and presence at the Board of Commissioners’ meeting brought awareness to the fact that libraries are important, valuable and necessary institutions in our communities,” Poyer said.

Meet Madeline at South Cobb library

The Madeline book series, first published in 1939, included five sequels. The original Madeline was named a Caldecott Honor Book, and the first of its sequels, ‘Madeline's Rescue’ received a Caldecott Medal.

‘Children perform for children’ in mini-musical at Mountain View

MARIETTA, GA – Children ages 3 and older, along with their parents are invited to a free performance by, ‘Encore, Encore’ from the Georgia Ballet School, May 21 at 3 p.m. in the Mountain View Regional Library.

The mini-musical will be followed with a brief question and answer session and then theater games.

Encore, Encore is an award-winning children’s performing group, ages 7-11, who performs in part, to educate youth on the various aspects of theater.

“Encore has served the community for 25 years performing in schools, at the Scottish Rite Hospitals and in senior’s residences. Mountain View Library will be the perfect nurturing place for the children’s stories to come to life right in front of their eyes,” said Barbara Hancock, CEO, founder, and director of Encore, Encore. “This is children performing for children in a safe, loving environment accompanied by their parents.”

Due to the school’s association with The Georgia Ballet professional company, some students also performed in professional productions including, ‘The Nutcracker,’ ‘A Sleepy Hollow Story,’ and ‘The Sleeping Beauty.’

Encore, Encore, Inc. was founded in 1983 as a non-profit organization. Hancock won two Golden Globe nominations for, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and ‘Most Promising Newcomer’ for her work in ‘Finian’s Rainbow’ with Fred Astaire. She worked at the Alliance Theater School since 1979 and taught theater and dance workshops in California and throughout Georgia.

Forum at library showcases local, oral history

MARIETTA, GA – Join the Cobb County Public Library System staff for a National Library Week event, ‘Coming of Age in Marietta: Conversations with the Marietta’s Elite Social Club,’ April 14, 1-2 p.m. at the Central library in Marietta.

The ‘Coming of Age in Marietta’ event is a round-table session about Cobb County history through the eyes of the ‘Elite Social Club’ members, a social club of African American women that started more than 50 years ago.

The members outgrew their initial intent, a sewing club. In a society and time that did not permit African Americans to join social clubs, the ladies blossomed into friends who provided each other strength and encouragement.

National Library Week is a celebration of libraries and the contributions of library staffs. This year’s theme, ‘Create Your Own Story @ the Library,’ emulates a timely message about preserving history.

Zoo Atlanta Library Program launches statewide

MARIETTA, GA – Georgia families can now check out free excursions to Zoo Atlanta, just by owning a library card. Announced Feb. 23 from the steps of the state capitol, a partnership between Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Public Library Service allows adults with valid library cards access to the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass at any participating public library branch throughout the state of Georgia.

The Cobb County Public Library System has Zoo Atlanta Family Passes available to check out today. Each of the 17 Cobb County library branches has one pass. When individuals check out the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass DVD from a Cobb County library and return it to the same location, they will get a receipt. They can then use the receipt for zoo admission. The receipt is good for two adults and two children and has to be redeemed within a week.

“We are very pleased to offer this wonderful opportunity to Cobb County residents,” Jonathan McKeown, Associate Director of Central and Outreach Services said. “The treasures that are held in the Cobb County Public Library System paired together with those held at the Zoo Atlanta make for a fitting partnership with the summer just around the corner.”

The pass may be checked out once per year, per card, per household. The pass is not valid for fee-based events or programs and may not be combined with other discounts or promotions. Standard general admission will apply to families with additional children; children must be accompanied by an adult. Passes are not ‘renewable,’ nor can it be reserved.

Library patrons can check out a Zoo Atlanta Family Pass DVD for one week. If the DVD is lost or damaged, a $30 replacement fee, in addition to any processing fees or overdue fines will be charged by the library.

Launched in 2009, the program originally applied only to branches of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. Wednesday’s announcement marks the first time the program has been available in all 159 Georgia counties.

Cobb library book sale has big bargains for readers

MARIETTA, GA – The Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System semi-annual book sale will be held, March 4-5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 6 from 1-5 p.m. at the Jim R. Miller Park on 2245 Callaway Road in Marietta.

Donated items for the book sale include soft-cover and hard-back books, magazines, text books, DVD and VHS movies, and children’s books. Prices range from 10 cents to $2. Last year, the book sales generated more than $50,000 which enabled the library staff to purchase new books, CDs and DVDs.

The March book sale attracts thousands of book-lovers to the event and is the first of two sales held yearly.

Tell dogs stories at Cobb libraries

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System teamed up with Reading Education Assistance Dogs for another exciting season of READing Paws programs with several newly-trained dogs joining the team.

READing Paws programs are available throughout the Cobb County libraries. The free children’s program is a one-on-one storytime and is used to enhance children’s love of reading and to encourage literacy through the use of therapy animals.

Children participating, read to a trained dog for 15-minute sessions that are monitored by a dog handler. Through the process, handlers help develop reading pronunciation and comprehension. With the dog present, the program intent is to help children be less anxious about their reading abilities and more apt to explore reading as a fun learning experience.

Dogs are registered, tested and insured therapy animals. They have been screened for skills and temperament, health and cleanliness, good manners and attitude.

‘In search of Tennessee sunshine’ writer leads book chat at South Cobb

MARIETTA, GA – The South Cobb Regional Library staff will host a book discussion by award–winning local author Margaret Johnson-Hodge, Feb. 24 from 6-8 p.m.

Margaret Johnson-Hodge, a Georgia resident and national bestselling author, will talk about her newest book, ‘In Search of Tennessee Sunshine.’ The novel describes the life of Erica Lorraine Simpson who becomes an un-expected widow.

‘In Search of Tennessee Sunshine’ is Johnson-Hodge’s tenth published novel, and she wrote that it is, “the most honest book” she has written.

Enjoy family time at ‘TV Turn-off Week’ at Cobb libraries

MARIETTA, GA – Join the Cobb County Public Library System, April 18-24 for the fourth annual ‘TV Turn-off’ Week where the celebration for family-time begins.

Free, drop-in style, activities will be held in the Central Library’s children’s department in Marietta each day of ‘TV Turn-off’ week. Monday-Thursday events run from 6-8 p.m., Friday the event is held all day, and Saturday, the event starts at 11 a.m. Game Week will be held at the East Cobb Library, April 18-21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

“These are all drop-in activities,” Jennifer Wells, head of youth and media services, said, “so … that families can get a few fun hours away from the distraction of their TV and computer screens.”

Central Library will host a scavenger hunt in the library Monday. Family members can team up to answer library-related questions and discover the library. Create and take home a craft together on Tuesday, when the library will have craft supplies available for whatever you can dream up. Challenge someone to a board-game duel on Wednesday night with one of several board games available at the library, if you dare! Thursday, enjoy hearing stories from Cobb County local celebrities. These heroes will get to read their family’s favorite story and share it with your family. Enjoy TV Turn-off Week all day, Friday when Central will host a paper airplane obstacle course. Don’t forget the finale: Join the Central Library tradition of Saturday Storytime at 11 a.m. to wrap up TV Turn-off Week.

At East Cobb Library, enjoy the ‘classics’ with a variety of board games for families to play in the East Cobb Teen Zone and program room. Patrons are welcome to enjoy games set out by the library staff or bring their own games.

Cobb library services e-reader fans, expands selections

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System has transitioned its downloadable audio books service from ‘NetLibrary’ to ‘OverDrive’ digital service company.

NetLibrary and OverDrive are companies that provide and manage online content for libraries like the Cobb County Public Library System.

While the library still offers e-books books through the NetLibrary venue, the audio book service has been discontinued. Since October 2010, audio books in OverDrive are used more than NetLibrary in the Cobb County Public Library System.

“As a result of the change, we will be adding more audio book titles. Additionally, by March 1, we plan on offering downloadable e-books that will be compatible with most e-readers such as the NOOK and Sony Readers,” Jonathan McKeown Associate Director of Central and Outreach Services said. “With the money we are saving, we’ll also be able to add more best-sellers to our print collection as well.”

According to the OverDrive web page, the system hosts more than 500,000 digital titles from more than 1,000 publishers, including Random House, HarperCollins, BBC Audiobooks America, Harlequin, and Bloomsbury.

McKeown said the Cobb County Public Library System wants to deliver when customers ask for a more extensive and popular selection.

People can access both audio and downloadable books with their library card through the library’s web page. Fiction and non-fiction selections are available.

The library offers classes on downloading audio books at the East Cobb Library. These classes will be expanded to the other Cobb County Public libraries by National Library Week in April. McKeown said library patron will want to check for information updates on the library web page because plans are coming together for classes on downloading e-books as well.

Steve Berry author visit rescheduled at Mountain View

MARIETTA, GA – Meet Steve Berry, author of ‘The Emperor's Tomb’ on Feb. 24, 7-8 p.m. in the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta).

After enduring the recent winter storm in Georgia, the Cobb County Public Library System is excited to be able to reschedule this author visit, previously slated to take place in January.

Berry is the New York Times bestselling author of 10 novels including, ‘The Balkan Escape,’ ‘The Paris Vendetta,’ and ‘The Charlemagne Pursuit.’ He has 11 million books in print, which have been translated into 37 languages and sold in 50 countries.

Before being published Berry twice won the annual fiction contest of State Bar of Georgia. In June 2005, he was selected by the Georgia Writer's Association (based on The Romanov Prophecy) as its Author of the Year. Then, in October 2005, the Amelia Book Island Festival bestowed on him their Nova Award. More recently, The Charlemagne Pursuit was selected as one of the five Best Thrillers for 2008 by Library Journal.

Cobb library hosts GA Department of Labor to offer job clinics

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System will host a free job-search workshop in March at the Powder Springs Library. The event, lead by the Georgia Department of Labor, is a three-part series designed to work as a ‘toolbox’ to empower the search of both employees and employers.

Workshops are held at 11 a.m. on the following days:

March 1: Job hunters can get tips on how to write résumés and cover letters. Get information on how to turn a job interview into a job offer, how to negotiate a higher salary, and tips on stretching your income while you are searching for that job.

March 15: Get information on and referral to federal training programs, as well as the Georgia Career Information System – an interactive PC application for gathering information about occupations, education and training programs, schools, and financial aid.

March 29: In the, ‘Recruiting Assistance for Employers,’ people can learn how to use local, state, and national applicant-tools or conduct a specialized recruitments with assistance from the Georgia Department of Labor’s marketing team.

Celebrate African American History at Cobb libraries

MARIETTA, GA – Celebrate African American History Month at the Cobb County Public Library System in February. Join the library staff for the, ‘Celebrate Your Heritage’ event, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. in the Central Library Gail Rogers Multipurpose conference room.

The program will feature a dance performance by the Paisley Dance Ensemble directed by Dr. Kisha Cunningham, the ‘A.L. Burruss Unity Drummers’ from A.L. Burruss Elementary School and a steel-drum performance by South Cobb Regional Library’s own Bobby Crosby.

The community is also invited to explore the Cobb County Public Library System’s recently-launched ‘Cobb African American Connection.’ The ‘Cobb African American Connection’ is a web page that features a growing collection of African American genealogy that highlights the cultural life and contributions of people of African descent in Marietta and Cobb County.

Housed in the Central Library’s ‘Georgia Room,’ the African American genealogy collection contains books, microfilm, microfiche and periodicals. Other resources in the collection include photographs and documents that highlight the historical, social, civic, religious, economic, and cultural life of African Americans in Cobb County.

Examples of African American resources found in the Georgia Room are: ‘Kennesaw State University Oral History Project Cobb NAACP/Civil Rights Series,’ ‘African American National Biography,’ and published biographies, ‘Gal, a True Life’ by Ruthie Bolton and ‘Freedom’s Child’ by Carrie Allen McCray.

Let’s Read 2010 explores Vietnam War era

MARIETTA, GA – Calling all readers! Cobb County Public Library System staff members are calling on Cobb County residents to participate in the 4th annual, ‘Let’s Read Cobb.’ The program takes place Sept. 25 through Jan. 1.

Let’s Read Cobb is a community-wide campaign held by Marietta Schools and the Cobb County libraries to promote books, encourage literacy, and energize the community to read.
Judges select a book for Let’s Read Cobb, and this year's selected title is, ‘The Things They Carried,’ by Purple Heart recipient Tim O’Brien. The fiction is a collection of short stories about his platoon in Vietnam.

People interested in joining Let’s Read Cobb can check out ‘The Things They Carried’ from their local library, are invited to join a book club, check out a book club kit or attend any of the three special programs slated in November. Cobb library cards are great school tools

MARIETTA, GA – September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Cobb County Public Library staff wants to make sure that all students in Cobb County have the smartest tool of all – a library card.

The Cobb County Public Library System will celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month by giving away a free gift every Monday in September at each library branch to the first patron who signs up for a new-account library card. Other activities at the Cobb County Public Library System during Library Card Sign-up Month include storytimes, book clubs, adult programming and a new series of computer classes for all computer learning- levels.

Library programming and materials make a difference in the lives of students. By providing the public with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds and ages become excited and enthusiastic readers.

A library card has always been an important start to the school year, according to Jonathan McKeown, Associate Director of Central and Outreach Services.

He said, there’s a lot happening at the Cobb County Public Library System and the best part for both children and parents, in these though economic times, is that it’s all free with a library card. More than that, our trained staff offers the excellent support system for students and parents alike.

Getting a library card is easy. Cobb County residents need to bring identification and an item verifying their Cobb County residency. People who are not Cobb County residents can obtain a library card for a nominal fee.

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

Cobb County ‘Friends of the Library’ host free author event

MARIETTA, GA – The Friends of the Library are hosting Georgia author Joshilyn Jackson, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. in a free event at the Vinings Library on 4290 Paces Ferry Rd., Atlanta.

Jackson, a New York Times bestselling author, will discuss her newest book ‘Backseat Saints.’

‘Backseat Saints’ (June, 2010), is the story of Rose Mae Lolley, a fierce, tiny ball of war wounds who was a minor character in ‘Gods in Alabama.’ The character’s life changes dramatically when she meets a gypsy who shares her past and knows her future. The gypsy's dire prediction: Ro's handsome, violent husband is going to kill her - unless she kills him first.

Children are invited to ‘Sing in the Stacks’ at Central Library

MARIETTA, GA – Children ages seven and younger are invited to attend a free concert by singer and song-writer Steve Weeks, June 24 at 10 a.m. in the Central, Cobb County Public Library System.
This program will be held on the main floor of the Central library located at 266 Roswell St. in Marietta as part of the library’s Summer Reading Program.
Weeks is the ‘2007 USA Songwriting’ winner in the children’s music category; He is the ‘2005 Parents’ Choice’ award-winner and is known for songs featured on XM-Kids Radio, channel 116. Fans will recognize some of his hit, Americana-folk songs, including, ‘Kiki Kangaroo’ and ‘Someday.’

Cobb libraries, Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers team up
MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System is taking part in the sixth annual Atlanta Hawks/Atlanta Thrashers ‘Check-It-Out Reading Challenge,’ running June 2 through Aug. 15 for students in grades K-12.
The event is designed to encourage youth to read throughout the summer months. By reading at least five books, participants can earn a free ticket to an Atlanta Hawks game and a free ticket for an Atlanta Thrashers game. Tickets are valid for 2010-2011 regular season home games.
After reading their selected books, participants can then visit www.checkitoutreading.com to receive their rewards. Each student completing the program can choose from among three Hawks and three Thrashers, selected home-games to use the free tickets. Additional tickets for families of the participants can be purchased at discounted prices. The last day to register for the Reading Challenge is Aug. 15.

Join reading dogs at Cobb libraries

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System teamed up with Reading Education Assistance Dogs for another exciting summer of READing Paws programs.

READing Paws programs are available throughout the Cobb County libraries. The free children’s program is a one-on-one storytime and is used to enhance children’s love of reading and to encourage literacy through the use of therapy animals. 

Children participating, read to a trained dog for 15-minute sessions that are monitored by a dog handler. Through the process, handlers help develop reading pronunciation and comprehension. With the dog present, the program intent is to help children be less anxious about their reading abilities and more opt to explore reading as a fun learning experience.

Dogs are registered, tested and insured therapy animals. They have been screened for skills and temperament, health and cleanliness, good manners and attitude.

Registration for READing Paws is required. READing Paws programs are schedule at the following Cobb County libraries:

Adult reading program launches at Cobb libraries

MARIETTA, GA – Summers are not just for kids anymore – at least not at the library. For the first time, the Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS) is hosting an adult summer reading program, ‘Water Your Mind — READ’ starting June 1.

In an effort to encourage families to read together, the adult program will run in conjunction with the youth, ‘Make a Splash — Read!’ and the teen, ‘Make Waves @ Your Library’ reading programs through July 30.

For Water Your Mind — READ, participants can catch a film, join a book club, or learn something new at the library. The Water Your Mind — READ programs are free and open to adults ages 18 and older. Water Your Mind @ the Powder Springs Library

GLASS applications are available at Cobb libraries
MARIETTA, GA – People with visual challenges of all ages and reading levels can borrow ‘audio-books’ and Braille through a free program. Applications are available at the Cobb County Public Library System.
The loan-program was developed to make library materials accessible through a delivery service made possible by ‘Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services (GLASS)’ and ‘Georgia's Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.’
Eligible applicants must be certified by a doctor or competent authority as, ‘unable to read or use standard print materials as the result of a visual or physical limitation.’ Librarians may provide certification in some cases.
Participants can start getting library materials, such as magazines and audio-books, delivered within about a week of submitting a request. Books on tape require equipment which is provided for free. All of the library loans are sent to borrowers and returned by postage-free mail.
GLASS is available digitally too; GLASS now supplies patrons with digital players and books. Patrons can also download books.
A variety of items, for all interests, are available to check out. GLASS members can request specific subjects, titles, or ask that library staff suggest titles. The member may even request various languages.
There are currently 528 Cobb County residents and 26 Cobb County organizations, including schools and nursing homes, registered with GLASS. Last year, 13,625 items were ‘checked-out’ to Cobb residents from the GLASS program.
The library goods for the ‘Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services (GLASS)’ are provided by the Library of Congress, National Library Service for the Blind & Physically Handicapped (NLS).
The National Library Service for the blind and physically handicapped was first established in 1931 to meet the needs of blinded veterans retuning home from war. Later, library services were extended to other blind people and children, although veterans are given preference on titles and other library materials.

GO Georgia park passes are available at Cobb libraries

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS) is participating in a statewide, ‘Get Outdoors Georgia’ campaign now through Dec. 31, 2010. As part of the campaign, library card holders can check out Park Pass folders for seven days, which contains a parking tag for Georgia state parks and a free family-pass, for up to four people, to Georgia historical sites.

The free parking tag, a $50 savings, can be used at any of Georgia’s 48 state parks. The family-pass can be used at any of the 15 historic sites in Georgia. Additionally, a ‘Guide to Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites,’ pamphlet is included in the folder.

Checking out a ParkPass folder is just as easy as checking out a book. A participant must have a valid library card to check out one of the 34 ParkPass folders that are available throughout the CCPLS system. Park Pass folders can be renewed twice. Patrons with overdue packets are charged 10 cents daily until it is returned, and fined $50 to replace lost folders.

Teen summer program kicks-off at Cobb libraries

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS) invites teens to ‘Make Waves—Read,’ as part of the free summer reading program that kicks off June 1 and runs through Aug. 1.

As part of the summer reading program, teens can write a book review on a book they read during the summer program and enter for a chance to win a Target gift card. The drawing will be held in the first week of August.

The summer reading program is a nationwide effort designed to encourage teens to read and to promote family reading events. The CCPLS schedule is full of free programs. Just a few of our programs follows:

Taking place at East Cobb Library:
Teen Improv, June 8 at 3:30 p.m.,
Scene of the Crime, June 15 at 3:30 p.m.
Mike Gerhard from the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office will present a program about the forensic science of performing autopsies and what they reveal. Due to the graphic nature of this program, participants must be at least 13 years old.
Wii game night, June 17 at 7 p.m. (*bring your games)
Anime Club, June 24 at 7 p.m.
Poetry Slam, July 15 at 7 p.m.
Teen Movie Night, July 29 at 7 p.m.

Cobb County Library makes a splash with reading program

MARIETTA, GA – The Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS) invites youth to ‘Make a Splash —Read,’ as part of the free summer reading program that kicks off June 1 and runs through Aug. 1.

The annual summer reading program is a nationwide effort designed to encourage children to read and to promote family reading activities. The CCPLS schedule is full of free water-themed activities for the Cobb County children. Just a few of our programs follows:

Cobb County Fire Department will present fun and fire-safety. Attendees get the chance to meet Firefighter Officer Orlando Zapata at the following libraries: Vinings Library, June 9 at 3 p.m.; Kemp Library, June 3 at 10 a.m.; East Cobb Library, June 16 at 3:30 p.m.; Stratton, June 2 3:30 p.m.

Join the Brooke and Branch Puppet Show presented by the Cobb County Watershed (CCW). The CCW teaches children about water conservation and will be at the following libraries: East Cobb Library, June 23 at 3:30 p.m.; Mountain View, July 8 at 7 p.m.; Powder Springs, July 20 at 11 a.m.; Kennesaw, June 2 at 3:30 p.m.; Stratton, June 16 at 3:30 p.m.

Children can learn about water pollution prevention in an interactive program presented by the Cobb County Watershed (CCW) at: Powder Springs, June 1 at 11 a.m.; Kemp Library, June 22 at 10 a.m.
Stratton, July 7, 3:30 p.m.; Vinings Library July 7 at 2 p.m.

Children can enjoy an interactive story and a craft while learning about the wetlands and all the critters who call it home with storytime by a member from the Cobb County Parks & Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. The wetlands programs are scheduled for: Kemp Library, June 10 at 10 a.m.; South Cobb Library, July 29 at 2 p.m.; Stratton, June 23, 3:30 p.m.; Kennesaw, July 7 at 3:30 p.m.

A member of the Cobb County 4-H Youth Club will present ‘The Story of The Rain Drop.’ The program will be a fun, interactive story about the water cycle. This storytime is scheduled at:
Kemp Library, July 24 at 10 a.m.; Vinings Library, June 30 at 3 p.m.; Stratton, July 14 at 3:30 p.m.

Participants in the summer reading program can also attend a free end-of-summer celebration involving storytelling, games and crafts, Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Central Public Library in Marietta. Cards for Troops kicks off in May at Cobb County libraries

MARIETTA, GA – Children of all ages are invited to join the Cobb County Public Library System for the, ‘Cards for Troops’ program, May 24-29.

The free, drop-in style event allows participants to make Fourth of July cards to be sent to military members both stateside and those soldiers deployed to Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan.

No registration is required and supplies are provided. For information on this free program, call 770-528-2331. Participating branches will the host Cards for Troops, in the library’s children’s departments, on the following days:

MARIETTA, GA – Starting today, the Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS) staff is committed to supporting Georgia Work Ready participants by making signing up for the program’s skills gap training easy.

People interested in Georgia Work Ready can use a self-paced online skills gap training system to improve their scores on the Georgia Work Ready assessment. The skills gap training is free and is used to improve assessment scores. By improving the scores, people can improve their Work Ready Certificate levels.

Getting great scores on the Georgia Work Ready assessment can not only showcase the best and brightest Work Ready Georgia citizens, but participants may be able to really cash-in on their success. Based on the Work Ready Certificate level, Georgia Work Ready participants who are also unemployed may be eligible for up to $200 in financial aid to help in their job search by visiting www.begaworkready.org.

Participants are not required to take the skills gap training, but it can be helpful for people who want to improve their scores.

The CCPLS staff at the Central Library can help people obtain a password and username, a requirement to access the training. Staff can also show demonstrate how to navigate the Web site. People can even call our librarians for help registering at 770-528-2377.

According to the CCPLS Associate Director of Central and Outreach Services Jonathan McKeown, it is also possible for people to register for the site through a technical college. Still, the library staff wants make the program as accessible as possible to the entire community and are ready to register people interested in the initiative.

“It is important for us to be involved with [Georgia Wok Ready] to help make it available to residents not enrolled in a school because we see a lot of patrons [that do not fall into those two categories and] who are looking for jobs,” McKeown said. “This is one way we can help them be better prepared.”

The Georgia Work Ready initiative is a four-year-old program that is empowering thousands of individuals to demonstrate their core skills and work habits to prospective employers by taking core skills assessment and obtaining Work Ready Certificates.

The Work Ready Certificate demonstrates career readiness by categorizing results into groups to show how well test-takers scored in a math category, a reading category and a ‘locating information’ category, and then places the applicant in to one of the four groups:

· Bronze indicates a minimum score of three in all three core areas
· Silver indicates a minimum score of four in all three areas
· Gold indicates a minimum score of five in all three areas
· Platinum, offered only in the state of Georgia, indicates a minimum score of six in all three core areas.

MARIETTA, GA – Join the Cobb County Public Library System, April 19-25 for the third annual TV Turn-off Week where the celebration for family-time begins.

Free, drop-in style, activities will be held in the Central Library’s children’s department in Marietta each day of TV Turn-off week. Monday- Thursday events run from 6-9 p.m., Friday the event is held all day, and Saturday, the event starts at 11 a.m.

“These are all drop-in activities,” Jennifer Wells, head of youth and media services, said, “so people can come and stay for a short time or a long time. Families can get a few fun hours away from the distraction of their TVs and computer screens.”

Central Library will host a scavenger hunt in the library Monday. Family members can team up to answer library-related questions and discover the library. Create and take home a craft together on Tuesday, when the library will have craft supplies available for whatever you can dream up. Challenge someone to a board-game duel on Wednesday night with one of several board games available at the library, if you dare! Thursday, enjoy hearing stories from Cobb County local celebrities. These heroes will get to read their family’s favorite story and share it with your family. Enjoy TV Turn-off Week all day, Friday when Central will host a paper airplane obstacle course. Don’t forget the finale: Join the Central Library tradition of Saturday Storytimes at 11 a.m. to wrap up TV Turn-off Week.

“Children are spending more time than ever in front of a screen, an average of 7.5 hours a day. TV isn’t inherently bad,” Wells said. “The problem is what we aren’t doing.”

MARIETTA, GA – Starting today, the Cobb County Public Library System will team up with Keep Cobb Beautiful (KCB) to provide battery recycling containers at all of the 17 library branches.

At no charge, individuals can drop batteries into the white, recycling bins where the KBC signs are posted.

Types of batteries that can be recycled are: cell phone batteries, power tool batteries, laptop batteries, digital camera batteries, video camera batteries and any type of Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, & Li-Ion rechargeable batteries.

Household batteries (alkaline or lithium primary batteries) are also accepted as well as dry sealed-cell and power-pack batteries are accepted. However, no wet-cell batteries will be accepted at this time.

Before dropping batteries into the recycle bin, KCB staff is asking patrons to tape the ends of the batteries or place each battery, separately, into a plastic bag.
